Early life and background

Karnesh Sharma was born on 26 August 1985 in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, and grew up in Bangalore and Dehradun. The son of Ajay Kumar Sharma, a retired army colonel who served during the Kargil War, and Ashima Sharma, he attended Army School. He is the elder sibling of actress Anushka Sharma.

Karnesh played competitive cricket in his youth, including appearances for the Karnataka under-19 team. Early in his working life he served in the merchant navy before moving into the film industry, where he began as an assistant director at Yash Raj Films.

Career

Karnesh transitioned from assistant direction into producing and directing films. His first film credit as a producer came with NH 10 (2015). He went on to produce a slate of Hindi features including Phillauri (2017), Pari (2018), Bulbbul (2020) and Qala (2022). In television and streaming, his producer credits include the Amazon Prime Video series Paatal Lok (2020) and Netflix projects Mai (2022) and Kohrra (2023).

In January 2018 he launched a production vehicle called Anant Film Studio LLP. He is also associated with other companies formed for film production, including Clean Slate Productions LLP, Karnesh Clean Slate Filmz Private Limited, and Clean Swwipe Entertainment Private Limited. In March 2022 he founded an NGO called Clean Slate Foundation.

Karnesh's work has been recognized within the Indian entertainment industry; he appeared on GQ's list of 25 Most Influential Young Indians in 2021. In 2023 he secured a reported content deal with the streaming platforms Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.
