Early life and background

Karthik Kumar was born on 21 November 1977 in Chennai. He completed his schooling at Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School and went on to earn a B.Tech in Chemical Engineering in 1999. He later studied marketing and brand management, finishing that qualification in 2001. From an early age he was drawn to performance; he has said his interest in acting began in childhood and he took part in school plays as a teenager.

Career

Karthik’s screen debut came in the Tamil film Alaipayuthey (2000), and over the years he has acted in a number of Tamil titles including Kanda Naal Mudhal (2005), Kola Kolaya Mundhirika (2010), Veppam (2011), Ticket (2017) and Mannar Vagaiyara (2018). He has also appeared in Hindi films such as Saathiya (2002), Yuva (2004) and Sapno Ke Desh Mein (2010). On television, he has been seen in the Tamil series Dharmayutham (2012).

Alongside his film and TV work, Karthik co-founded the event and theatre company Evam in 2003. The company grew from his passion for theatre, but he has described the financial difficulties the venture faced and the eventual bankruptcies the business experienced.

In 2016 Karthik announced a step back from pursuing further feature-film acting and shifted his focus toward live performance. He established himself in stand-up comedy, performing roughly 300 shows in India and abroad. His solo specials have included #PokeMe and Second Decoction, and he released Blood Chutney as a stand-up special. He has also produced short comic videos for YouTube on themes such as South Indian vs North Indian, Vegetarians vs Non-Vegetarians and Middle Class Eating Out.

Karthik is also an author: in 2018 he published Don’t Startup: What no one tells you about starting your business, a book reflecting on entrepreneurship and the difficulties of building a company.
