Early life and background

Karthika Nair was born on 27 June 1992 in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. She grew up in a Malayali family and is the daughter of former actress Radha Nair and businessman Rajasekaran Nair. Karthika attended Hult International Business School and completed her graduation from the London School of Economics and Political Science in 2013.

Career

Karthika began her acting career at seventeen with the 2009 Telugu film Josh, in which she played Vidya, a determined schoolteacher. She followed that debut with roles across South Indian cinema, moving between Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada projects.

Her profile rose in 2011 with two notable films. In Tamil cinema she appeared as Renuka Narayanan in the political thriller Ko, and in Malayalam she took on a dual role in Makaramanju as Sugandha Bai and Urvashi. Her work in Makaramanju earned critical recognition and several awards. Over the following years she appeared in a mix of commercial and critically minded projects: Dammu (Telugu, 2012), Proprietors: Kammath & Kammath (Malayalam, 2013) where she played a mute young widow in government service, and Brindavana (Kannada, 2013), a successful remake in which she played Bhoomi.

In 2014 she featured in Brother of Bommali as Mahalakshmi/Lucky, portraying a street-smart tomboy and a twin role. The next year she appeared in the political crime drama Purampokku Engira Podhuvudamai as Kuyili, a character involved in a prison-break plot.

Although she retired from regular film acting around 2015, Karthika made her television debut in 2017 with the Hindi epic drama Aarambh, playing the warrior queen Devasena. The series reached both audiences and critics and marked her transition to the small screen.

After stepping back from films Karthika shifted some of her focus to the family business. She assists her father in running hotels and serves as a director of the UDS Group of hotels based in Thiruvananthapuram.
