Early life and background
Kashmala Tariq was born on 24 January 1972 in Lahore Cantonment, Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan. She grew up in Lahore Cantonment and completed her early education at Govt. Queen Mary Graduate College. She went on to study at Kinnaird College and the University Law College at the University of the Punjab, where she completed legal studies. She also attended the London School of Economics and Political Science, adding an international dimension to her academic background.

Career
Kashmala entered national politics as a member of the Pakistan Muslim League (Q) in 2002. That year she won a reserved seat for women from Punjab and became a member of the National Assembly. She retained a reserved women’s seat for Punjab in the 2008 general election and continued her parliamentary work.

During her parliamentary career she gained international recognition when she was elected in 2007 as chairperson of the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians, becoming the first Pakistani parliamentarian to hold that position.

In February 2018 Kashmala Tariq was appointed Federal Ombudsperson for Protection Against Harassment of Women at Workplaces. Her appointment was for a four-year term that began on 27 February 2018.

During her time as Federal Ombudsperson, questions were raised about her continuation in office after the end of the four-year tenure. In June 2022 the Islamabad High Court issued a notice in response to a petition alleging she had continued serving after her term expired on 27 February 2022.

Her tenure at the Ombudsperson Secretariat also included workplace complaints from staff. In 2022 an employee filed a complaint alleging mistreatment and mental harassment following a disputed promotion process and ensuing internal actions.
