Kathi Mahesh Kumar was born on 14 December 1977 in Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh. He grew up in a middle-class family and completed schooling at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya before studying communications at the University of Hyderabad. Mahesh built a varied career in Telugu cinema as a critic, writer, director and actor. He began appearing on screen as an actor in the 2011 Telugu film Edari Varsham and later acted in several regional films including Hrudaya Kaleyam (2014), Nene Raju Nene Mantri (2017), Kobbari Matta (2019), Amma Rajyam Lo Kadapa Biddalu (2020) and Krack (2021), in which he is credited as ‘Kathi’. He also took on work behind the camera: he co-wrote the film Minugurulu (2014), which achieved the distinction of being the first Telugu film whose script entered the permanent collection of the Academy’s library and was submitted in the Best Feature Film category at the Academy Awards. Mahesh made his directorial debut with the Telugu film Pesaratu (2015) and is credited as a co-writer on the Tamil film Egise Taarajuvvalu as well.
