Early life and background

Kaushik Ganguly was born on 4 August 1968 in Kolkata, West Bengal. He grew up in that city, attended Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya in Narendrapur and later studied at Jadavpur University, where he completed an M.A. in Bengali Literature and a B.Ed. While at university he became involved in theatre, forming a group with peers including Suman Mukhopadhyay and Churni Ganguly.

Before moving full-time into films and television, Ganguly worked as a schoolteacher for eight years, teaching at St. James' School for five years and at St. Xavier's School in Kolkata for three years. His father, Sunil Ganguly, was a guitarist. He married Churni Ganguly on 16 January 1993; their son Ujaan Ganguly has also acted.

Career

Ganguly began his career in the film world as a screenwriter in 1987, initially writing for Telugu cinema before concentrating on Bengali films. He scripted a number of Bengali projects across the 2000s and early 2010s, including Shunyo E Buke (2005), Jackpot (2009), Arekti Premer Golpo (2010), Rang Milanti (2011) and Laptop (2012).

He moved into directing for television when he joined ETV Bangla in 1995, where he made a range of series and telefilms. His telefilms addressed varied subjects and included portrayals of LGBTQA issues in productions such as Ushnatar Janye, Ulka and Aatithi, marking early representations of queer themes on Bengali television.

Ganguly made his feature directorial debut with Waarish in 2004. Subsequent films won critical recognition: Shunyo E Buke (2005) established his film work, and Arekti Premer Golpo (2010) was notable as an early queer-themed Bengali feature after the 2009 Delhi High Court decision affecting Section 377. Cinemawala (2016) was conceived as a tribute to disappearing single-screen cinemas, while Nagarkirtan (2017) explored the social challenges faced by transgender and queer communities.

Across his directing career he has delivered several acclaimed films, among them Jackpot (2009), Laptop (2012), Bishorjan (2017), Lokkhi Chele (2022) and Ardhangini (2023). His screen work also includes serving as writer and director on projects such as Laptop, where he additionally performed on screen.

As an actor, Ganguly first appeared in Chalo Let's Go (2008) as Anando. He has taken supporting and leading roles in a range of Bengali films, including Notobor Notout (2010), Antaheen (role of Mrinmoy), Nirbashito (2014, as Jayanta), Shankar Mudi (2017, title role), Drishtikone (2018), Tarikh (2019) and Kaberi Antardhan (2023). His performances have drawn audience appreciation, and over time he has achieved lead roles that reflect a changing industry aesthetic.

He also won Best Director at the 4th Filmfare Awards Bangla for Jyeshthoputro and received Filmfare nominations related to Shabdo and Kangal Malsat.
