Kaushik Mukherjee was born on 17 June 1983 in Kolkata, West Bengal. He grew up in Kolkata and attended Don Bosco School, Calcutta, before moving on to higher studies. Musically inclined from a young age, he learned to play the sitar and took part in school athletics and team sports, including cricket and relay events.

Education and formative years

Mukherjee completed a B.E. (Hons) in Electrical & Electronics at the Birla Institute of Technology & Science, Pilani (2000–2004). He went on to earn an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (2006–2008). While at college and during his MBA, he was active in cultural and sports activities: he participated in music clubs as a vocalist, drummer and sitarist; held roles in event coordination and club leadership; and represented his institutions in swimming and football.

Career

After graduating from BITS Pilani, Mukherjee began his professional career at Oracle Corporation in Hyderabad, working as an applications engineer from 2004 to 2006. He later joined Goldman Sachs in New York as an analyst in April 2007. In 2008 he founded BigSlick Infotech/AK Venture, a business services company based in Hyderabad. His entrepreneurial path included early setbacks: an e-commerce venture in 2008 did not succeed and a seed-funded online insurance portal was shut down, experiences he has discussed publicly.

Mukherjee returned to the consulting world with a role at McKinsey & Company in Mumbai in November 2010, where he worked for nearly three years.
