Early life and backgroundKavita Krishnamurthy was born on 25 January 1958 in New Delhi into a Tamil Iyer family. Raised in the capital, she moved to Bombay at age 14 to pursue opportunities in the music industry. She completed a B.A. (Honors) in Economics at St. Xavier's College, Mumbai.
Her early training included exposure to Rabindra Sangeet and classical music under the guidance of teachers encouraged by family members. Those formative lessons helped prepare her for the variety of musical work she would later undertake across languages and genres.

Kavita's first recorded film song credit appears in 1978, when she sang the title track for the Kannada film Ondanondu Kaaladaga. She continued to work through the late 1970s and early 1980s, including a Hindi recording for Maang Bharo Sajana (1980) that was ultimately cut from the final film.
The mid-1980s brought wider recognition. A notable early hit came in 1985 with the song "Tumse Milkar Na Jaane Kyon," and a breakthrough moment followed when she sang for the 1986 film Mr. India. Kavita won multiple major awards for playback singing during the 1990s and early 2000s, including several Filmfare Awards, Star Screen Awards, Zee Cine Awards and IIFA Awards for songs in films such as 1942: A Love Story, Yaraana, Khamoshi: The Musical, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Kya Kehna and Devdas.
