Early life and background

Kavya Madhavan was born on 19 September 1984 in Nileshwar, Kasaragod district, Kerala. She grew up in a Malayali family and attended local schools including Jaycee English Medium School, GLP School and Rajahs High School in Nileshwar. Trained in classical dance from childhood, she studied Bharatanatyam and Mohiniyattam under teachers such as Guru Shyamala and Kuttamathu Janardhanan.

Her father, P. Madhavan, played a part in launching her into films after responding to a casting notice for a child role. Her mother was initially hesitant about a film career and preferred that Kavya complete her education and settle down.

Career

Kavya made her first on-screen appearance as a child actor at around age five in the 1991 Malayalam film Pookkalam Varavayi. She continued to appear in several child roles through the 1990s before moving into adult lead roles. Her credited early adult appearance was in Chandranudikkunna Dikhil (1991) as Radha, and she also worked in Tamil cinema, including the film Kasi (2000) in which she played Lakshmi.

Across the 2000s and 2010s she was a regular lead in Malayalam films, featuring in titles such as Darling Darling (2000), Meesa Madhavan (2002), Sadanandante Samayam (2003), Runway (2004), Inspector Garud (2007), Paappi Appacha (2010), Vellaripravinte Changathi (2011) and Pinneyum (2016). She has also taken part in shorter projects, including short films like Bhoomikkoru Charamageetham (2006), Kaavalal (2016) and Kachadhappa (2016).

Kavya has explored other creative avenues alongside acting. She has performed as a playback singer on films such as Matinee (2012) and Daivame Kaithozham K Kumarakanam (2018). She released an album called Kavyadalangal in 2012 and contributed lyrics to songs in films, including En Kalbilulloru for One Way Ticket (2008) and Kalaam Neeangu Poyo for Akashvani (2016).
