Early life and background

Keemo Mandela Angus Paul was born on 21 February 1998 in Guyana, South America. Raised in a family that moved within Guyana to give him better access to training and facilities, Paul attended Essequibo Islands Secondary School while developing his cricketing skills. His parents are David and Rita Paul, and he has siblings including David Jr, Candy Paul and Keon Paul.

Career

Paul is a right-handed batsman and a right-arm fast-medium bowler who emerged from the West Indies youth system as a genuine all-round option. He made his List A debut in the Regional Super50 tournament in January 2015 and was subsequently named to the West Indies squad for the 2016 Under-19 Cricket World Cup. Paul took seven wickets during that tournament and helped his side in their campaign.

Progressing to senior domestic and franchise cricket, Paul has represented teams such as West Indies U19, Guyana Amazon Warriors, West Indies A, West Indies, Delhi Capitals, Montreal Tigers and Quetta Gladiators. In October 2017 he recorded his maiden first-class century against Jamaica in the 2017–18 Regional Four Day Competition, a milestone in his red-ball development.

Paul made his Twenty20 international debut on 1 April 2018 against Pakistan, his One Day International debut on 15 March 2018 against Afghanistan, and his Test debut on 12 July 2018 against Bangladesh. He has worn the number 84 jersey for both the West Indies and Delhi Capitals in franchise cricket. In 2018 he was recognised as Emerging Cricketer of the Year at the Cricket West Indies Awards and was offered a development contract for the 2018–2019 season by Cricket West Indies.

In the Indian Premier League auction of 2019 Paul was bought by Delhi Capitals at a base price of Rs. 50 lakhs and remained with the franchise into the 2020 IPL season. His domestic and franchise commitments have included participation with teams across formats and competitions.

Playing style and mentorship

Paul combines pace bowling with lower-order batting power. He bats right-handed and operates as a right-arm fast-medium seamer. At points in his career he has worked with notable coaches and mentors, including Ricky Ponting.

Public profile

Physically, Paul is listed at around 1.80 m (5 ft 9 in) with black hair and black eyes. He is Guyanese by nationality and, as of the latest details in this profile, is unmarried. His international appearances have come across formats for the West Indies, and he has also been active in franchise leagues both in the Caribbean and overseas.

Incidents and recognition

During the Under-19 Cricket World Cup final, Paul was involved in a controversial instance in which he ran out a batsman at the non-striker’s end, an action that received attention at the time. Separately, his progress was acknowledged through the Emerging Cricketer of the Year award from Cricket West Indies in 2018 and the development contract he received that same season.

Latest updates

By 2019 Paul had been bought by Delhi Capitals in the IPL auction and was retained for the 2020 season. He replaced an injured Sheldon Cottrell in the West Indies squad for the 2018 Cricket World Cup Qualifier tournament. Across his career to date he has continued to represent domestic teams such as Guyana Amazon Warriors and appeared in various franchise competitions.
