Ken Fernandes, professionally known as Ken Ferns, was born on October 8 in Mumbai. He grew up in the city and completed schooling at St. Thomas Academy, Mumbai. From an early age he showed an interest in drawing and designing costumes — a childhood pastime that involved borrowing dolls to design outfits for them.

Ken pursued multiple courses in the arts and fashion. His studies include programs at the National Institute of Fashion Technology, Mumbai; CEPZ Institute of Fashion Technology, Mumbai; Wigan & Leigh College (now WLC College); St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai; and L. S. Raheja College of Arts & Commerce. These varied educational experiences provided the foundation for a career that spans teaching, styling and costume design.

Career

Ken began his professional life in a variety of roles before establishing himself in fashion. Early jobs included sales work at exhibitions and shops and performing as a dancer and choreographer at events. At 21 he started teaching, serving as a lecturer at SNDT Women’s University, later joining NIFT Mumbai as a lecturer and working as guest faculty at other fashion institutes.

He transitioned into costume and wardrobe design for screen and stage, taking on assignments for television, film, music videos and live fashion events. Ken has worked as a costume designer for BBC Worldwide and served as a wardrobe stylist on many Indian reality television programs. His television credits include long-term styling work on Bigg Boss, as well as costumes for Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa and Nach Baliye. In 2019 he received the Indian Television Academy Award for Best Costume Designer for Nach Baliye season 9.

On screen and in entertainment beyond TV, Ken has styled for Hindi films such as Rok Sako To Rok Lo (2004) and Yeh Mera India (2008). He has created looks for music videos including Birthday Pawri (2021) by Meet Bros and Buhe Bariyan (2022) by Kanika Kapoor. His styling work also extended internationally: he contributed to Ubisoft’s Just Dance title and worked at the Bollywood Theme Park in Dubai.

Ken has presented collections on the Indian fashion circuit, showing at Lakmé Fashion Week and events including Luxury Style Week in Bangalore, India Runway Week in Delhi and North Eastern Fashion Week in Guwahati. He launched his own clothing line at India Resort Fashion Week in Goa in 2021 and has collaborated on retail projects such as a capsule collection titled Ken Ferns For Splash with the Splash fashion group. For Romedy Now he created a clothing line called Love Laugh Live.
