Early life and background

Keshari Nath Tripathi was born on 10 November 1934 in Allahabad (now Prayagraj), in what was then the United Provinces of British India. He grew up in a family active in public life; his father Harish Chandra Tripathi retired from service at the Allahabad High Court and helped establish the Saryu Pareen School that Tripathi attended in his early years. Tripathi completed his schooling in Allahabad and went on to study at the University of Allahabad, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1953 and a Bachelor of Legislative Law in 1955. He enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh in 1956 and began practicing at the Allahabad High Court.

Career

Tripathi combined a long legal career with public service and politics. Early on he was active in right-leaning political circles, joining the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh in 1946 and associating with the Jana Sangh from 1952. He first entered electoral politics as an MLA from the Jhusi Assembly constituency during 1977–1980, serving in the Uttar Pradesh cabinet as Minister for Institutional Finance and Sales Tax in that period.

He joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in April 1980 and won election to the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly from Allahabad South on multiple occasions: 1989, 1991, 1993, 1996 and 2002. Within the assembly he served as Speaker on several occasions, holding the post during 1991–1993 and then through stretches including 1997–2004. He also served as president of the Uttar Pradesh BJP in 2004 and was a member of the party’s National Disciplinary Committee. He contested the Allahabad South seat in 2012 but did not win that election.

In parallel with practice at the bar, Tripathi built a reputation as an election-law specialist. He worked as a lawyer at the Allahabad High Court, serving as Joint Secretary and later as President of the High Court Bar Association for consecutive terms in 1987–1989. He became a Senior Advocate at the High Court in 1989. Over his career he represented a number of prominent political figures and litigants in election-related matters. He was offered elevation to the bench of the Allahabad High Court in 1980 but declined the appointment.

Constitutional and gubernatorial roles

After a long legislative and party career in Uttar Pradesh, Tripathi was appointed to several constitutional posts as Governor. He served as the 27th Governor of West Bengal from 24 July 2014 to 29 July 2019. During his gubernatorial tenure he also held additional charges at various times: Governor of Bihar (two separate additional-charge periods: 27 November 2014–15 August 2015 and 20 June 2017–29 September 2017), Governor of Meghalaya (6 January 2015–19 May 2015), Governor of Mizoram (4 April 2015–25 May 2015), and additional charge of Tripura in 2018.

Public profile

Tripathi maintained an active presence beyond politics and law. He participated in Commonwealth Parliamentary Association activities, serving as president of the Uttar Pradesh branch in the early 1990s and again in 1997, and attending multiple international CPA conferences. He was also a vocal promoter of Hindi, speaking at World Hindi Conferences in London (1999) and Paramaribo (2003), and he served as Acting President of the UP Hindi Sansthan in Lucknow.

An accomplished writer, Tripathi authored both legal works and creative writing. His legal contributions include a detailed commentary on the Representation of the People Act (1951) published in 1974. As a poet and author, his books include The Images (Manonukriti in Hindi, 2002), Khayalon Ka Safar (2017), Jakhmon par Shabab (2017), The Wings of Age (2018), and Destination Jesus (2021).

Over the years Tripathi received several awards and honours recognizing his public service, literary work and contribution to the state, including distinctions such as the Uttar Pradesh Gaurav Samman, Uttar Pradesh Ratna Award, Vishwa Bharti Award and multiple literary sammans.

Personal life

Tripathi married Sudha Tripathi in 1958. The couple had three children: a son, Neeraj Tripathi, who practises as an advocate at the Allahabad High Court, and two daughters, Namita Tripathi and Nidhi Tripathi. Nidhi served as an officer in the Armed Forces Headquarters Service. His daughter-in-law Kavita Yadav Tripathi has been active in politics as a BJP member. Tripathi’s wife has passed away; she died in 2016 following a stroke.
