Early life and backgroundFaisal Khan, widely known as Khan Sir, was born in 1992 in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, and grew up in Deoria, Uttar Pradesh. He attended Parmar Mission School in Bhatpar Rani, Deoria, before moving on to the University of Allahabad, where he completed undergraduate and postgraduate studies, earning both BSc and MSc degrees; he also holds an MA in geography. As a youth he took part in the National Cadet Corps and at different times pursued competitive exam paths such as Sainik School, IIT and NDA attempts, the latter cleared academically but not in the physical round. Early jobs and skills training included welding and operating heavy machinery at his father’s suggestion when competitive examinations did not work out as planned.
Career
Khan Sir began his teaching career at a small coaching institute where his initial classes were tiny—only a handful of students. Over time his classes grew from a few pupils to dozens and then to hundreds, and his unconventional, humorous approach to current affairs and general studies earned him a wider following. He founded Khan GS Research Centre and expanded his reach through published books, a mobile app launched on the Google Play Store, and a YouTube channel started in 2019 that focused on current affairs and classroom-style lessons. The channel grew rapidly and helped popularize his distinct teaching voice.
His public profile led to invitations to mainstream television: he appeared on Sony TV’s The Kapil Sharma Show and later made an episodic appearance on Kaun Banega Crorepati Season 15, where host Amitabh Bachchan publicly praised his ability to explain scientific concepts clearly. Khan Sir has also organized large in-person events at his coaching centre and has described teaching fee policies that include free tuition for financially disadvantaged students.
Community work and ventures
Beyond classroom teaching, Khan Sir has been involved in social projects. He established a goshala in Patna to shelter stray cows and set up a library as part of his community contributions. His coaching institute has drawn large student gatherings and occasional public events; in 2023 he held a Raksha Bandhan event attended by thousands of students.
Public profile
Khan Sir became a household name in parts of India through a mix of online tutorials, live coaching and media appearances. He is known for employing satire, everyday examples and a conversational tone to simplify complex topics. His public visibility brought both endorsements and scrutiny. In 2019 his centre was attacked and vandalized during an incident in Patna; his office was reported to have been damaged.
Controversies and legal matters
Several incidents have brought Khan Sir into the legal and political spotlight. In January 2022 an FIR was lodged related to protests and unrest following the RRB-NTPC examination; Khan Sir and several colleagues were named in the complaint and charged under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code. In December 2022 a tutorial video that contrasted reactions to Hindi and Muslim names drew criticism from public figures and political leaders. In 2023 another classroom video in which he discussed historical examples and drew a comparison involving Kashmir prompted further controversy. In January 2025 the Bihar Public Service Commission issued a legal notice alleging that he and some coaching institutes had spread misinformation and used unethical remarks against the commission; Khan Sir stated he would challenge the notice in the Patna High Court.
