Early life and background
Khyali Saharan was born on 1 January 1978 in 18 SPD Badopal village in Hanumangarh, Rajasthan. He grew up in a middle-class Chaudhary family and completed schooling only up to class 9; records indicate he failed class 10 three times and did not attend college. In childhood he was more active in co-curricular pursuits than academics.

After leaving formal education, Saharan moved to Sri Ganganagar where he took a series of manual jobs. He worked as a guard at a swimming pool and later at JCT Mills. During his time at the mill he suffered a serious accident in which his right hand was caught in a die-cutting machine; his recovery took about 13 months. While working in Sri Ganganagar he also sold cinema tickets and joined a local theatre group, performing in a first play titled Poster.

Career
Saharan’s stage work expanded beyond his home district to cities such as Jaipur and Bikaner. He relocated to Chandigarh after attending an acting workshop and began anchoring stage shows. His comic timing and anchoring led to opportunities to host shows for well-known Punjabi singers; for several years he earned modest fees for live appearances.

In December 2005 he auditioned for The Great Indian Laughter Challenge Season 2 and became the only contestant representing northern India on that season. He finished as second runner-up, a breakthrough that led to offers in films and television. Film appearances followed, including parts in Hindi releases such as Journey Bombay to Goa: Laughter Unlimited, Singh is Kinng, Meri Padosan, Muskurake Dekh Zara, Bhavnao Ko Samjho and Marudhar Mharo Ghar. He has also appeared in Punjabi films including Mukhtiar Chadha, JATT vs IELTS, Ult Pult and Kulche Chole.

On television Saharan has been part of many reality and comedy programs, with credits on Comedy Circus, Mazak Mazak Mein, MAD in India and SAB TV Jokes, and he performed as a guest on The Kapil Sharma Show in 2018. He also featured in a commercial for Jio 11.

Saharan created a YouTube channel, Khyali Comedy, in August 2020 where he posts his comedy sketches. The channel features a recurring character, Roop Nath, and has grown to hundreds of thousands of subscribers.

In April 2022 he formally entered politics by joining the Aam Aadmi Party and was appointed divisional in-charge for AAP in Bikaner.
