Kim Yo Jong Biography

Kim Yo Jong is a North Korean politician from the ruling Kim family who has risen to prominent roles within the Workers' Party of Korea. Born in Pyongyang,

Early life and background

Kim Yo Jong was born in Pyongyang on 26 September 1987. She spent part of her childhood with her siblings at her mother’s home and later attended school in Bern, Switzerland, where she was registered under an assumed name. She studied computer science at Kim Il Sung University in Taesong, Pyongyang.

Career

Kim Yo Jong began working within the structures of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea in the late 2000s. By 2007 she was a junior member of the party and over the following years took roles supporting her father’s and brother’s political transition and state activities. In 2009 and 2010 she worked with the National Defence Commission and with staff close to her father, appearing among a small group of family and associates at public events.

Her public profile increased after the death of Kim Jong Il in December 2011, when she appeared alongside her brother, Kim Jong Un, at the funeral and thereafter took on responsibilities that included planning and managing her brother’s trips, schedules and security. State media first formally mentioned her in 2014 when she accompanied Kim Jong Un to vote for the Supreme People’s Assembly.

In November 2014 Kim Yo Jong was appointed First Deputy Director of the Workers’ Party of Korea’s Propaganda and Agitation Department. She served as a vice-director in that department and was described as leading projects to promote Kim Jong Un’s image. By July 2015 state reporting suggested she was acting as the principal leader within the department despite an official director remaining in place. She later held the title of vice-minister and was named to the party Politburo in October 2017, becoming the second woman to receive that appointment. She has also been identified with responsibility for elements of state security and was at times described as linked to Office 39.

Kim Yo Jong has participated frequently in state diplomacy and high-profile international moments. She attended the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang as a special envoy, meeting South Korean President Moon Jae-in and delivering a letter from Kim Jong Un. She has accompanied Kim Jong Un to summit meetings with the United States, including the Singapore summit and the 2019 Hanoi meeting, and she has issued formal statements on behalf of the party as a deputy director.

Her party rank has shifted at times: she was removed from the Politburo in April 2019 and later returned in April 2020; in January 2021 she was again removed from the Politburo and her departmental rank lowered from first deputy director to deputy director. Observers cited in reporting have argued that despite these formal changes she has continued to exert influence.

Public profile

Kim Yo Jong is widely known as the sister of Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un and as a visible member of the Kim family across state functions and international events. She has been involved in organizing major public events and image-building activities, and she is frequently present on inspections and official visits alongside her brother.

She has been sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury, which in 2017 blacklisted her in relation to allegations concerning control of information and human rights issues. She has also issued outspoken statements on inter-Korean relations and on military matters, at points warning against South Korean actions and rejecting certain approaches to dialogue.

Personal life

Kim Yo Jong is a North Korean national. Reporting indicates she married Choe Song, who is identified as the second son of a senior official, Choe Ryong-hae. The excerpt notes she gave birth to a child in May 2015 and lists additional children in some reports. Her extended family includes her parents Kim Jong Il and Ko Yong Hui, her brother Kim Jong Un, and several other prominent relatives from the Kim dynastic line.

Latest updates

In recent years Kim Yo Jong has been an active voice in state publicity and diplomacy. In July 2025 she publicly rejected renewed South Korean peace overtures, stating that North Korea continued to regard South Korea as an enemy and expressed no interest in talks. Her standing within party structures has seen adjustments, but she remains a prominent and frequently visible figure in North Korea’s domestic and international engagements.
