Kimi Katkar was born Nayantara Katkar on 11 December 1965 in Bombay (now Mumbai). Raised in a family connected to the film world, her mother Tina Katkar worked as a costume designer and actress, and her father worked as a junior artist supplier for films. Katkar completed her education to the graduate level and grew up in Mumbai, where she later launched a career in modelling at about 17.
