Early life and background

Kiran Choudhry was born on 5 June 1955 in Faizabad, Uttar Pradesh. She grew up in a family with military roots; her father, Atma Singh, was a retired Indian Army officer. She completed a Bachelor of Arts at Adarsh College in Bhiwani and went on to earn an LLB from Panjab University, Chandigarh. Those academic years preceded a legal career during which she practised at the Supreme Court of India for about 15 years.

Career

Choudhry entered active politics as a member of the Indian National Congress and has held a series of party and government roles over several decades. Early in her political life she served as General Secretary of the All India Mahila Congress in 1986. She won election to the Delhi assembly in 1998 and served as its deputy speaker.

Following the death of her husband, Surender Singh, Choudhry contested the Tosham seat in a 2005 Haryana Legislative Assembly by-election and was elected. She went on to represent Tosham in the Haryana Assembly at least three more times, winning elections in 2009, 2014 and 2019.

In state government she has held cabinet-level responsibilities. In 2005 she became Minister of State with portfolios that included Forest, Environment, Tourism and Sports. Under the Bhupinder Singh Hooda administration she was Cabinet Minister for Excise and Taxation and Public Health Engineering and, in 2009, received recognition in the tourism sector. By 2014 she was serving as leader of the House in the Haryana Assembly.

Choudhry has received awards acknowledging her legislative and ministerial work. She has been honoured with a Priyadarshini Award and was named Best MLA for Outstanding Legislator during her time in the Delhi Vidhan Sabha. In 2009 she was recognised by the Pacific Asia Travel Association for her work related to tourism.

Her political life has also seen controversies reported in the public record, including allegations connected to a plantation-related investigation and a high-profile family dispute over ancestral property. In 2022 a matter involving a rejected ballot in a Rajya Sabha contest attracted attention and public comment from other political figures.

Personal life

Kiran Choudhry married politician Surender Singh, who died in 2005 in a helicopter crash. The couple had a daughter, Shruti Choudhry, who is also active in politics. Choudhry’s mother was Sarla Atma; both of her parents died in 2021. She comes from the Jat community and is a resident of Bhiwani, Haryana.

Outside politics she lists hobbies such as listening to music, reading, painting, writing poetry and designing clothes. She has said that history and archaeology are among her favourite subjects. In 2012 she established the Surender Choudhry Memorial Club, which organises social welfare activities such as blood and eye donation drives.
