Kiran Karmarkar was born on 2 May 1958 in Mumbai, where he continues to be based. An Aquarian by birth, he began his performing journey on the stage, joining a Marathi theatre group called Dinmaan in 1989. That early grounding in theatre set the tone for a career that would span plays, television serials and films in both Hindi and Marathi languages.

Career

Karmarkar made his screen debut in Marathi cinema with the 1992 film Nishpaap. He moved into television in the mid-1990s, appearing in the horror anthology Mano Ya Na Mano in 1995 and then in shows such as Itihaas (1996) and Safar (1996). Over the following decades he built a steady presence on Indian television, taking roles in series including Abhimaan (1999), Ghar Ek Mandir (2000), Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii (2000–2008), Kkehna Hai Kuch Mujhko (2004), Saarrthi (2006), Uttaran (2012), Badalte Rishton Ki Dastaan (2013), Tamanna (2016), Dhhai Kilo Prem (2017), Zindagi Mere Ghar Aana (2021) and Spy Bahu (2022).

Karmarkar became widely recognized for his portrayal of Om Agarwal in the long-running family drama Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii, which aired on StarPlus and ran through much of the 2000s. He later earned acclaim for the role of Tej Singh Bundela in Uttaran. His television work also includes mythological and historical roles, such as Maharaj Shantanu in Kahaani Hamaaray Mahaabhaarat Ki (2008).

On the big screen, Karmarkar has worked in both Hindi and Marathi films. After his Marathi debut, he appeared in Yadnya (1994) and later took supporting parts in Hindi features including Shirdi Sai Baba (2001), Thoda Tum Badlo Thoda Hum (2004), Raajneeti (2010), Force (2011), Shanghai (2012) and Jai Gangaajal (2016). His Marathi film work includes titles such as Aaghat (2010), Pune 52 (2013), Family Katta (2016), Bhatukali (2014), Shasan (2016), Kanha (2016) and June (2021). More recently he appeared in the Hindi film Darlings (2022) and played the character More in the 2023 web series Scam 2003: The Telgi Story on SonyLIV.

Alongside screen work, Karmarkar has remained active in theatre, performing in plays such as Merra Naam Joker (his first comic stage role in 2006), Bas Itna Sa Khwab Hai…! (2010), Kachche Dhage, Salim Aarif, Humsafar and Shaadi Ki Home Delivery. He has also featured in television commercials.
