Early life and background

Kiran Mani completed a postgraduate diploma/ MBA in Business Strategy, Management and Marketing at IBS Hyderabad between 1996 and 1998, where he was a national topper and merit scholar. He also pursued the Chartered Financial Analyst program at the Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts, completing that qualification between 2006 and 2008 and earning national merit recognition. Mani’s formal training combines strategy, marketing and finance, a foundation that shaped his career across technology, media and advertising.

Career

Mani began his professional journey in advertising as an account planner at Ogilvy & Mather from April 1998 to December 1999, working on consumer brands including Lakmé and Pond’s. He moved to IBM in 2000, initially serving as a brand manager and advancing into leadership roles. From January 2004 he was general manager for strategy, marketing and operations in India for IBM’s server and storage division, and from January 2006 to February 2008 he served as vice president for strategy, marketing and operations for ASEAN and South Asia.

In February 2008 Mani joined Microsoft Corporation as senior director for marketing, strategy and operations, a role he held until January 2010. While at Microsoft he co-founded an ad-tech start-up, Fosbury Flop, in July 2009 and led the venture until its acquisition in October 2011.

Mani’s long tenure at Google began in March 2010. He led sales for India, then moved to the San Francisco Bay Area as managing director and global client partner from December 2011 to June 2016, building global advertiser partnerships across more than 25 cities. From June 2016 to April 2020 he was managing director for US retail, overseeing more than $5 billion in advertising revenue and heading Google’s global retail practice. Between April 2020 and September 2023 he served as general manager for Android and Google Play for Asia Pacific and Japan, focusing on platform growth for partners and developers in the region.

Parallel to his corporate roles, Mani has been active as an angel investor and board advisor since 2014, supporting ventures such as Jeevitam, Rapture Innovation Labs, Onlinesales.ai and Public Next. He also contributed to academic and industry bodies: he was a board advisor for the NUS MBA program at the National University of Singapore (August 2021–January 2023) and later joined several Indian industry and academic boards.

In October 2023 Mani became chief executive officer of JioStar in Mumbai, where he led consumer growth, content and revenue for digital platforms including JioHotstar and Cricinfo and was involved in building one of India’s largest media platforms following the Viacom18–Star India merger. In May 2025 he joined the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) as a board member and chair of its entertainment committee, and in August 2025 he became a board member at the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI). In March 2026 he joined the Department of Management Studies board at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras.

In March 2026 Mani left JioStar to take on the role of managing director for Asia-Pacific operations at OpenAI.
