Kiran Mazumdar Shaw was born on 23 March 1953 in Bengaluru, Karnataka. Raised in a family connected to the brewing industry, her father worked as a brewmaster and her early years included time spent around breweries. She completed secondary schooling at Bishop’s Cotton Girl’s High School in Bangalore and earned a bachelor’s degree from Bangalore University. At 21 she traveled to Australia to study fermentation science and obtained a Master of Science from the University of Melbourne, where she was the only woman in her class.

A chance meeting with Leslie Auchincloss, founder of an Irish biotechnology firm, led to a joint venture to produce industrial enzymes in India. She founded Biocon Biochemicals in 1978 and became sole owner in 1981. From those modest beginnings the company expanded from plant-based enzymes into biostimulants, generic drugs and proprietary pharmaceuticals. Biocon grew to operate across many countries and became noted as one of India’s largest biotechnology firms and a major insulin producer in Asia.
