Early life and background

Kiren Rijiju was born on 19 November 1971 in Nafra, a village in West Kameng district, Arunachal Pradesh. He grew up in the same region and later moved to New Delhi for higher education, where he attended Hans Raj College and the University of Delhi and completed a BA followed by an LLB. Rijiju has described his early years as active in social work and student leadership, and he participated in cultural exchanges and athletics during his school and college days.

Career

Rijiju’s public life began with roles in grassroots institutions: he served on the Khadi and Village Industries Commission from 2000 to 2005. He first entered the Lok Sabha after winning the Arunachal West seat in 2004. After losing that seat in 2009, he continued to stay active in politics and returned to the Lok Sabha in 2014, again representing Arunachal West.

Following the 2014 general election, Rijiju joined the Union government as Minister of State for Home Affairs. In the 2019 Lok Sabha election he retained Arunachal West, defeating his nearest rival by a substantial margin.

In May 2019 he was appointed Minister of State with independent charge of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, while also holding the post of Minister of State for Minority Affairs. On 7 July 2021 he took oath as Union Minister of Law and Justice. In May 2023 he was shifted from the Law Ministry to the Ministry of Earth Sciences. In March 2024 he received additional responsibility as the Minister of Food Processing Industries after a resignation in that ministry.

Rijiju is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Over his career he has been identified with youth and sports portfolios as well as home affairs and law. He has been noted for his electoral strength in Arunachal West, where he has won multiple Lok Sabha contests, including the 2024 election in which he again prevailed by a clear margin.
