Early life and background

Kirit Somaiya was born on 12 February 1954 in Bombay (present-day Mumbai), Maharashtra. He grew up in a middle-class Gujarati family in Mumbai. Somaiya completed his schooling at MM Pupils High School, Khar, and went on to study commerce, earning a Bachelor of Commerce degree in 1975 from Shrimati Mithibai Motiram Kundnani College of Commerce & Economics, University of Mumbai. During his student years he was active as a student activist and associated with the BJP youth wing. In 1975, amid the national Emergency, he took part in the wider political movement led by Jayaprakash Narayan. Before entering full-time politics, Somaiya practised briefly as a chartered accountant in his own firm.

Career

Somaiya began his formal political career with the Bharatiya Janata Party. He was first elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly in 1995 from the Mulund constituency, winning by a large margin. As an MLA he advanced legislative work that included sponsoring bills and measures such as the Small Investors Protection Act of Maharashtra and the Repealing Coroners Court (Post Mortem) Act, and he introduced the Housing Society Conveyance Bill.

In 1999 Somaiya won a seat in the 13th Lok Sabha representing Mumbai North-East. During that term he was active in parliamentary business, serving on standing and consultative committees including the Standing Committee on Finance, Standing Committee on Commerce and Industry, Committee on Petitions, Public Accounts Committee and the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Railways. He distinguished himself by presenting a high number of petitions in the 13th Lok Sabha and by raising a large volume of questions on the floor of the House.

He was a member of the General Purposes Committee and participated in ad-hoc and sub-committees addressing protocol violations and PPP projects.
