Early life and background
Kirron Kher was born Kiran Thakar Singh Kher on 14 June 1952 in Punjab, India. Raised in a family with sporting and artistic interests, she played badminton during her childhood alongside her sister Kanwal Thakar Singh, who later became an accomplished player. Kirron completed her postgraduate studies in English literature at Panjab University, Chandigarh, earning a Master of Arts degree in 1973.

Career
Kirron Kher pursued acting across stage, television and film. Her first credited film appearance came in the Punjabi film Aasra Pyaar Da (1983), and she made an early television appearance in the Hindi serial Isi Bahane (1988). She worked steadily in theatre in the 1980s and met fellow actor Anupam Kher while both were involved in stage productions; they later performed together in the play Chadnpuri ki Champabai in 1985.

During the 1990s Kirron expanded her presence on television, hosting shows such as Purushkshetra, Kiron Kher Today and Jagte Raho with Kiron Kher. Her film career includes several critically recognised performances: she won the National Film Award for Best Actress for the Bengali film Bariwali in 1999, earned a Filmfare nomination for Best Supporting Actress for Devdas (2002), received international awards for Khamosh Paani (2003), and was again nominated for a Filmfare Best Supporting Actress award for Rang De Basanti (2006). Kirron also made a guest appearance on the American TV series ER in October 2004 and served as a judge on India’s Got Talent in 2009.

Politics
Kirron Kher entered active politics by joining the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2009. She campaigned in local elections in Chandigarh in 2011 and was the BJP’s Lok Sabha candidate for Chandigarh in the 2014 general election. In May 2014 she won the Chandigarh parliamentary seat, defeating her nearest competitors, and she retained that seat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. During her time as a Member of Parliament she advocated for projects such as a proposed Film City for Chandigarh.

Kirron is married to actor Anupam Kher; the couple married in 1985. They have one son, Sikandar Kher, who is also an actor and was born in October 1981.
