He grew up in a family with deep political roots: his father, Bhagwat Jha Azad, was a longtime Indian National Congress politician and served as chief minister of Bihar. Kirti Azad attended Modern School in New Delhi and went on to study history at St. Stephen's College, University of Delhi, where he completed a BA (History Hons).
Cricket career
Azad made his international debut for India on 6 December 1980 in a Test match against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. A right-handed batsman and right-arm offbreak bowler, he represented India in seven Test matches and 25 One Day Internationals between 1980 and 1986. He was a member of the Indian squad that won the 1983 Cricket World Cup.
At the domestic level he played for Delhi and continued to feature in Ranji Trophy cricket before transitioning away from the playing field. One notable innings cited from his career is a high-scoring performance in a Prime Minister’s Relief Fund exhibition one-day match in 1983, where he played a finishing role in a successful chase.
Political career
Azad entered politics while still involved in domestic cricket. He joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 1993 and served as a member of the Delhi Legislative Assembly representing the Gole Market constituency from 1993 to 1998. He was later elected to the Lok Sabha from Darbhanga, serving multiple terms: he was first elected to the 13th Lok Sabha (1999–2004) and subsequently returned to Parliament in the 15th (2009–2014) and 16th (2014–2019) Lok Sabhas, all on a BJP ticket.
In 2019 he left the BJP and joined the Indian National Congress. He remained with the Congress for a period before affiliating with the All India Trinamool Congress in 2021. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections he contested from the Bardhaman-Durgapur constituency in West Bengal and won that seat by a margin of 137,981 votes.
