Early life and background

Kishore Kumar Jena was born on 6 September 1995 in Kothasahi village in the Brahmagiri area of Puri district, Odisha. Raised in a farming family, his parents are Keshab Jena and Harapriya Jena. He attended Brahmagiri High School and later studied at Utkal University in Bhubaneswar, completing a graduate-level education.

From a young age Jena showed an interest in sports. He originally pursued volleyball but a practical decision when seeking admission to a sports hostel in Bhubaneswar led him to use a javelin certificate from a tournament in Cuttack, and that choice set him on the path toward a career in the javelin throw.

Career

Jena began formal training in javelin in 2015 under Nila Madhab Panda. In 2016 he joined the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) in Bhopal, continuing his development with coach Rupanwita Panda. He later moved to the National Institute of Sports (NIS) in Patiala, where he worked with coach Samarjeet Singh Malhi. Under Malhi’s guidance he made technical changes including lengthening his run-up from roughly 13–14 metres to about 21 metres and altering his release angle, adjustments that contributed to steady improvement.

At state and national levels Jena has set and broken meet and state records. In April 2017 he established a new meet record of 72.77 metres at the 64th Odisha State Athletics Championship and was named the best male athlete of that competition. In September 2021 he set a new Odisha state record with a throw of 76.41 metres at the 68th Odisha State Senior Athletics Championship.

Jena’s progression continued through 2023 with a series of personal bests. In March 2023 he threw 78.93 metres at the 2nd Indian Open Throws Competition and, later that month, achieved 81.05 metres at the Indian Grand Prix 1 held at LNCPE. In June 2023 he recorded 82.87 metres at the 62nd National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championship. July 2023 saw further competitive appearances including performances at the Lebanon National Athletics Championships and the Sri Lanka National Athletics Championship, where he produced a personal best of 84.38 metres.

On 4 October 2023 at the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, Jena threw 87.54 metres and won a silver medal.
