Kitu Gidwani was born Kaushalya Gidwani on 22 October 1967 in Mumbai. She grew up in the city she calls home and attended Fort Convent School. After finishing her schooling she pursued higher studies and completed a post-graduate degree in French. Her family has roots that trace back to migration during the partition era; her parents moved to India from Pakistan and lived in a refugee camp in Worli, Mumbai. She has one brother.

Gidwani began performing professionally in the 1980s. Her early screen appearances include the television serial Trishna (1984), in which she played the role of Roohi, and the Hindi film Holi (1984). She went on to build a diverse body of work across theatre, television and cinema, expanding into French- and Tamil-language projects as well as continuing to appear in Hindi films.

On television she became widely recognized for several serials through the 1990s and beyond, with credits that include Junoon (1994), Swabhimaan (1995), Karvaan (1997) and Kulvaddhu (2006). A notable role from the late 1990s was the character Geeta Vishwas in the popular series Shaktimaan, a part she played until the 24th episode. More recently she has been seen in Yeh Un Dinon Ki Baat Hai (2018).
