Early life and background

Koel Purie Rinchet was born on 25 November 1978 in Delhi, India. She grew up in a family with strong media and journalism connections; her father is Aroon Purie and her mother is Rekha Purie. Her siblings include Kalli Purie and Ankoor Purie, and she is also related to journalist Madhu Trehan.

Purie attended Modern School in New Delhi. She went on to study politics, philosophy and economics at York University and later trained at The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. She has described herself as not religious and has spoken about valuing her Punjabi roots while resisting being boxed by labels.

Career

Koel Purie began working in television in the late 1990s, hosting shows such as Great Escape for Star Plus and Aaj Ki Naari for DD Metro. She also worked as a newsreader on a special election show for India Today and assisted in film production on Deepa Mehta’s Earth in 1999.

Her first acting role came in 2001 in the Indo-American film Everybody Says I’m Fine!, followed by roles in both Indian and international projects. Notable early film credits include Road to Ladakh (2004) and American Daylight (2004), and she appeared in the BBC drama-documentary Dirty War. Over the years she has acted in more than twenty films across India, the United Kingdom and Canada, with titles such as White Noise (2005), The Lookalike (2006), Rock On! (2008), 10ml LOVE (2012) and The Zoya Factor (2019).

On television and in series work she has taken on varied parts, including single-episode roles in shows such as The Vice and The Afternoon Play, and parts in productions like Losing Gemma and Fairy Tales. Her stage work includes performances in Leicester Haymarket and a role in A Taste for Mangoes, adapted from William Dalrymple’s White Mughals.

In 2013 Purie created, produced and hosted On The Couch With Koel on Headlines Today. The interview-format programme featured a wide range of guests from film, music, literature, sport and global affairs.

Beyond acting and presenting, she has been involved in production and content creation. While living in Tokyo she served as a tourism mascot for the Japanese government and produced promotional videos. She later lived in Paris, where she established a production company focused on films and digital content.

Writing and other creative work

Purie is a regular contributor of articles to Indian magazines and lifestyle publications. In August 2023 she published a book titled Clearly Invisible in Paris. She has described herself as a storyteller and has spoken about turning to the discipline of writing later in life.
