Early life and background

Ajith Haridas was born on 7 April 1962 in Pala, Kottayam, Kerala. He grew up in Kollam and received his schooling at Krist Raj High School in Kollam. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts from Sree Narayanan College, Kollam. His parents were Haridas, who worked for the railways, and Devakiamma, a homemaker. He had several siblings: brothers Jyothibasu, Anildas and Kishore, and sisters Pushpakumari and Shobana.

Career

Ajith began his film journey after attracting the attention of director Padmarajan, who cast him as an actor in the 1984 film Parannu Parannu Parannu. Padmarajan became an influential figure in Ajith's career, and Ajith went on to appear in many of the director’s projects. Over the course of his career he appeared in more than 500 films across South Indian languages, often portraying antagonists.

He featured in notable Malayalam films including Irupathaam Noottaandu (1987), Agnipravesham, No.20 Madras Mail, Nadodikkattu, Aaraam Thampuran, Olympiyan Anthony Adam, Yuvajanotsavam and Valliettan. His only Hindi screen appearance was in Virasat (1997).

Beyond acting, Ajith explored work behind the camera. He wrote and directed the Malayalam film Calling Bell and also directed Pakal Pole. In television, he appeared in series such as Kairali Vilasam Lodge (Doordarshan), Vajram, Pavakoothu, Kadamattathu Kathanar, Swami Ayyappan and Devimahathmyam (Asianet).

In later years he planned to direct a bilingual project titled Per Shivakami, Vayasu 18. His last film appearance was in the Malayalam movie Ivan Ardhanaari (2012).

Often credited as Kollam Ajith, he was commonly associated with villainous parts and was regarded as a regular presence in many mainstream Malayalam productions.
