Early life and background

Konica Layak was born in 1994 in Anugrah Nagar, Dhanbad, in the Indian state of Jharkhand. She grew up in a family headed by her father, Parth Prateem Layak, who worked in a private job, and her mother, Beena Layak, an aanganwadi worker. Konica had three sisters — two older and one younger. She completed her schooling locally and went on to study at Raja Shiv Prasad (RSP) College in Jharia and later earned a Master of Commerce degree.

Career

Konica took up rifle shooting while a member of the National Cadet Corps during her college years. She specialized in the 10m air rifle event and won medals at district and state levels, including a gold medal at the district level and three state gold medals across competitions held in 2015, 2016 and 2017. She qualified for the National Shooting Championship on multiple occasions, competing at events in Pune (2016) and Kerala (2017).

Despite clear promise, Konica faced equipment and resource challenges throughout her career. She often practiced with a borrowed rifle and at one point publicly appealed for support to obtain an upgraded rifle so she could compete effectively at the national level. In June 2021 actor Sonu Sood stepped in and provided her with a German-made rifle. Following that support, she joined the Jaideep Karmakar Shooting Academy in Kolkata to continue her training and the coach reduced her training fees.

Konica's competitive record placed her among Jharkhand's noted shooters in the 10m air rifle category. She qualified for national-level meets three times but did not reach a national final; limited access to an upgraded rifle was cited as a factor in those outcomes. Her coach described her skills as raw when she arrived at the academy and noted she had suffered a setback in October prior to her death when she was disqualified from a pre-national event on charges of tampering with the target.

Her personal life intersected with her sporting profile when the rifle gifted by Sonu Sood and her subsequent training in Kolkata were reported in the media. She was engaged and had plans to marry in February 2022.

Death and aftermath

On 15 December 2021, Konica Layak died in a hostel room at Mukti Neerh Ladies Hostel in Howrah district, West Bengal. She was 26 years old. Local authorities reported that she was found hanging in her room and that a suicide note was recovered in which she expressed that she felt she had failed to fulfill her parents' dreams. Police began an investigation that included examining her phone and speaking with family members who traveled from Jharkhand. Her father said he did not understand why she had taken such a step and that she had seemed fine in their last conversation.

Those who knew her, including her coach Joydeep Karmakar, reflected on recent difficulties she had faced in competition and noted the wider concerns within the shooting community following several recent suicides among shooters. Her mother had visited her three days before her death and reported that Konica appeared happy and without visible problems.
