Kovai Sarala was born Sarala Kumari on 7 April 1962 in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. Raised in a Malayali family, she moved to Chennai with her parents after finishing school. Her father served in the army and her mother is named Shakthi Illam. Sarala grew up with one brother and four sisters. A journalist later prefixed her hometown to her name, and she became widely known as Kovai Sarala.

Career

Sarala first appeared on screen as a teenager. Her earliest credited film role came in Velli Ratham (1979) when she was in the ninth grade. Over the decades that followed she established herself as a versatile supporting and comedic performer across Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada films. Her Tamil debut is listed as Velli Ratham (1979), her Malayalam debut as Thaliritta Kinakkal (1980), Telugu debut as Veera Prathap (1987) and Kannada debut as Africadalli Sheela (1986).

She is remembered for several notable parts, including Palaniammal Sakthivel Gounder in Sathi Leelavathi (1995) and comic turns in films such as Muni 2: Kanchana (2011) and Mersal (2017). In more recent work she played Veerathayi, the grandmother at the center of Prabhu Solomon’s Sembi (2022). For that role she underwent a visible transformation — dyeing her hair grey and adopting an unglamorous look — and performed demanding scenes without relying on visual effects.

Across her career Sarala has taken on characters that required age transformations: she played a 32-year-old pregnant woman at the age of 15 in Mundhanai Mudichu (1983) and later portrayed a 65-year-old mother in Chinna Veedu (1985).
