Early life and background

KPAC Lalitha was born Maheshwari Amma on 25 February 1948 in Kayamkulam, India, and grew up in a family from Ramapuram near Kayamkulam. She was the eldest of five siblings. Her father, Kadaykatharayil Veettil K. Ananthan Nair, worked as a photographer and her mother, Bhargavi Amma, was a homemaker.

As a child her parents moved to Changanassery so she could learn classical dance. She trained under teachers including Chellappan Pillai and Kalamandalam Gangadharan. Lalitha began performing in plays and shows from a very young age, taking on stage work by the time she was ten.

She left formal schooling in the seventh grade after her father suffered a collapse at work. With the family under financial pressure she remained active in theatre to support the household.

Career

Lalitha began her stage career with the K.P.A.C. (Kerala People’s Arts Club), a theatre collective whose name she later prefixed to her own in recognition of her roots in that company. Her film debut came in 1969 with the Malayalam feature Koottukudumbam, directed by Sethumadhavan. For that first film she received a payment of one thousand rupees.

After marrying filmmaker Bharathan in 1978 she briefly stepped back from acting. She returned to screen work in the early 1980s and built a prolific career across more than five decades, appearing in over 550 films. Her screenography includes a wide range of supporting and comic roles that brought both popular recognition and critical praise.

Lalitha’s performance in Amaram (1991), a film directed by her husband, earned her the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress. She won the same national honour again in 2000 for Shantham. Across state and industry awards she received multiple Kerala State Film Awards, Asianet Film Awards, and a Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009.

Her notable screen appearances span commercially successful and artistically acclaimed films: Adakku Nooki Yanthram, Dasharatham, Godfather, Amaram, Vietnam Colony, Pavithram, Manichitrathazhu, Sphadikam, Shantham, Life Is Beautiful and Valkannadi among others. Her work included both dramatic supporting parts and memorable comic turns.

Beyond acting in films, Lalitha remained connected to theatre throughout her life and served as chairman of the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi for five years. She also authored an autobiography, Katha Thudarum (Story To Be Continued), which won the Cherukad Award in 2013.

Personal life

Lalitha married filmmaker Bharathan in 1978. The couple had two children: a son, Sidharth, and a daughter, Sreekutty. Bharathan died in 1998. Sidharth later entered the Malayalam film industry as an actor and then moved into direction; he directed the 2012 film Nidra, a remake of a 1984 film originally directed by his father.

Throughout her life Lalitha maintained ties to her classical-dance training and her early theatre work. She once described a period early in her stage career when she accepted a demanding physical regimen to meet the demands of a role.

Death

KPAC Lalitha died on 22 February 2022 in Thrippunithura, Ernakulam, Kerala, at the age of 73 following a prolonged illness.
