Early life and background

Krishan Bahadur Pathak was born on 24 April 1997 in Kapurthala, Punjab. He grew up in a family of Nepali descent; his parents had moved to India in 1990. After the deaths of his parents, he was brought up by his paternal uncle, Chander Bahadur Pathak, in Kapurthala.

Pathak attended the Government School in Kapurthala. He began training seriously in hockey at age 12 when he joined the Surjit Singh Hockey Academy in Jalandhar. As a youngster he practised at the Rail Coach Factory grounds in Kapurthala and took on manual work at construction sites to help support his family before his sporting career took off.

Career

A goalkeeper by trade, Pathak broke through into representative hockey as a teenager. At 14 he was asked to step in as a goalkeeper for an Indian Railways team during a match and was later selected for that side. He also represented the Indian Oil Corporation hockey team as his domestic career developed.

Pathak earned selection to India’s men’s national under-19 team and made his international debut at the 2016 Men’s Hockey Junior World Cup. India won the tournament, and Pathak featured as the team’s goalkeeper. Two days before his international debut he suffered the loss of his father but continued to play, honoring his father’s wishes to represent India.

In 2016 he joined the Mumbai-based franchise Dabang Mumbai for the fourth season of the Hockey India League. The following year he was part of the Indian contingent that travelled to Perth for the 27th edition of the Australian Hockey League. That same year he took part in the Bombay Gold Cup representing the Indian Oil Corporation team and was named the tournament’s best goalkeeper after his side won the title.

Pathak has been part of India’s senior squads in major tournaments. He played at the 2017 Men’s Hockey World Cup held in Bhubaneswar and featured in the side that won bronze at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta. He was a member of the Indian team that won silver at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

More recently, Pathak was in the squads that secured gold medals at the 2023 Men’s Asian Champions Trophy in Chennai and the field hockey event at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou.

Accolades

Pathak’s performances have been recognised with several honours. He was named Best Goalkeeper at the Bombay Gold Cup in 2017 and earned Hockey India’s Goalkeeper of the Year award in the organisation’s fifth annual awards in 2022. In 2024 he received the Arjuna Award for outstanding performance in sports and games.
