Krishna Malhotra was born on 30 December 1930 in Rewa state, Madhya Pradesh, India. She grew up in a large family; her father, Raisaheb Kartar Nath Malhotra, served as an Inspector General of Police in Rewa. Her father had three wives and thirteen children, and Krishna was one of the daughters. She was related to the prominent Kapoor family by birth: she was a cousin of Prithviraj Kapoor through her maternal uncle.
