Krishna Nagar Biography

Krishna Nagar is an Indian para-badminton player from Jaipur, Rajasthan, known for winning gold in men’s singles SH6 at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics and for,

Early life and background

Krishna Nagar was born on 12 January 1999 in Jaipur, Rajasthan. He grew up in a lower-middle-class family and spent his childhood in his hometown. At around two years of age his parents discovered that his growth was not keeping pace with peers; medical checks identified a growth-hormone related condition resulting in dwarfism. His father, Sunil Nagar, worked as a physiotherapist. Krishna has an elder sister and a younger brother.

As a child and teenager Krishna endured teasing and discouraging remarks from classmates about his height. Those experiences, and a period when his family explored medical options, motivated him to focus on sports. Early interests included sprinting, jumping and team games; he later gravitated toward badminton after joining a stadium in Jaipur when he reached college around 2017. It was there that he was introduced to para-badminton and learned about classification for athletes with his condition.

Career

Krishna began competing internationally in para-badminton in 2018. That year he won a bronze medal at the Asian Para Games in Jakarta in the men’s singles SS6 category. The following year he had a string of strong performances: he claimed two titles at the Uganda International in 2019 (men’s singles and men’s doubles SS6) and took bronze and silver medals at the 2019 BWF Para-Badminton World Championships in Basel, Switzerland, in singles and doubles respectively.

In April 2020 Krishna competed at the Dubai Para-Badminton International and won two gold medals. The peak of his sport achievements came at the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo, where he won the gold medal in men’s singles SH6. That event was the first time badminton was included at the Paralympic Games in this discipline, and Krishna celebrated the victory as a milestone for himself and for Indian para-badminton.

He trains under coach Gaurav Khanna and plays left-handed. His international ranking reached as high as world number two in men’s singles SH6.

Public profile

Krishna’s Paralympic success increased public recognition and eased some earlier financial pressures his family faced. Prior to international success, his family struggled to meet expenses for equipment and travel; his father later described their investment in his training as worthwhile. In recognition of his achievements, Krishna was conferred the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award in 2021.

He has also been appointed as an assistant conservator of forests in Rajasthan in an honorary capacity. Physical characteristics commonly noted in public profiles list his height as 1.37 m (4 feet 5 inches), with black eyes and black hair.

Latest updates

As of 2021 Krishna is unmarried and continues to be based in Jaipur. His competitive record through 2020 and the honor in 2021 reflect his rise within para-badminton since taking up the sport in 2017. He has spoken publicly about his journey from being mocked as a child to becoming a Paralympic champion and has thanked family members, coaches and supporters for their roles in his success.

Krishna’s story remains one of sporting achievement built from early adversity, with national recognition and continued involvement in the sport and public life following his Paralympic triumph.
