Early life and background

Kona Srikar Bharat was born on 3 October 1993 in Ramachandrapuram, Andhra Pradesh, and grew up largely in Visakhapatnam. He showed an early interest in cricket and was sent to a local academy by his parents to channel his energy into the sport. Bharat was a capable student at school and balanced education with extensive practice, spending years honing his game in nets and on the field.

Bharat did not begin wicketkeeping until his late teens. Until about age 17 he mostly fielded in slips and gully; when his state side needed a keeper who could bat, coaches encouraged him to take up the gloves and he made his first appearance as a wicketkeeper in a Ranji Trophy match against Hyderabad.

Career

Bharat made his first-class debut in 2013 against Kerala and became a key player for Andhra in domestic competitions. He built a reputation as an aggressive right-handed batter who can also keep wickets. His domestic career includes appearances for Andhra, India A, India Blue and India Red, Board Presidents XI, Rest of India, and various IPL franchises.

A major milestone came when he scored a triple century in the Ranji Trophy, becoming the first wicketkeeper to reach 300 in the tournament and joining a small group of players to record triple hundreds in first-class cricket. Another highlight of his domestic run was a prolific 2014/15 Ranji season in which he amassed 758 runs at an average above 50, a campaign often referenced as a turning point in his career.

Bharat spent several seasons representing India A in unofficial Tests, playing 11 matches between 2018 and 2019 against A teams from South Africa, West Indies, Sri Lanka, Australia, New Zealand and England. In that period he scored 758 runs including three centuries and two fifties, and effected 47 dismissals as a wicketkeeper.

He has been part of multiple India squads as cover or standby keeper. Selections have included Duleep Trophy India Blue in 2018, a Test squad for the Bangladesh series, standby roles for series in England and Australia, and inclusion in a Test squad against England after performances in domestic cricket.

In the Indian Premier League, Bharat was first bought by Delhi Daredevils in 2015. He was later acquired by Royal Challengers Bangalore, where he produced a memorable finish in October 2021: with his team needing five runs off the last ball, he hit a low full toss for six to secure victory. In 2021 he was purchased by Bangalore for 20 lakhs INR. In the 2024 IPL auction he was picked up by Kolkata Knight Riders for 50 lakh INR.

He registered his first List A century while playing for India A against Australia A in Bengaluru on 10 September 2021, an innings of 106 that helped India A reach a strong total in a match that finished in a draw.
