Kuldeep Sharma (Nati King) Biography

Kuldeep Sharma, popularly known as Nati King, is a Himachali singer celebrated for his performances of traditional Nati folk songs. Born in Theog, Shimla,,

Early life and background

Kuldeep Sharma was born on 26 August 1977 in Theog, Shimla, Himachal Pradesh. He grew up in a musical household: his mother was a well-known local singer who provided his initial training. Kuldeep attended school locally and completed his education up to the 12th standard. From a young age he took part in school singing competitions, winning several prizes and demonstrating an early aptitude for performance.

Career

Kuldeep’s first notable break came as a teenager when, at age 16 in 1994, he auditioned for All India Radio (AIR) Shimla and was selected to record three songs. He made his stage debut in 1997 at the Dharamshala Summer Festival, marking the start of a public performing career that would grow steadily.

His recorded debut as a solo artist came with the original song "Supne Di Mili Bolo Ameya Tu Meriye," created under the guidance of his maternal uncle and mentor, Liaq Ram Rafiq. Early in his recording journey he released an album that failed commercially, but he later found success by remixing older Himachali songs. A Punjab-based label, TM Music, invited him to record, and the company released seven albums featuring his work. Over time Kuldeep recorded more than 100 audio and video albums, and several of his releases became widely popular in Himachal Pradesh.

Kuldeep’s repertoire includes many Himachali folk and popular tracks such as "Rohru jana meri aamiye," "Meri Preeti Zinta kindi chali tu," "Meri Monika," "Dhola Ra dhamaka," and "Pata paani Ra ho meri gaangiye." Among his albums are Himachali Geet Dhamaka (2005), Naati Fever (2016), and Chal Baliye (2016). He has also produced Bhajan video albums.

His contributions to regional music have been recognized with multiple awards. He was honoured by Hind Sangram Parishad in May 1995, received titles such as Himachal Shri and Best Singer of Himachal, and has been named Pahari Singer on more than one occasion. He has also won the Pahari Mrinal Award and the Him Shri Award. In July 2024 he received recognition from the World Book of Records during an event at the British Parliament in London.

Kuldeep has performed on national and international stages, promoting Himachali culture beyond the state. He has contributed to Indian cinema as well: one of his songs was remixed in the Bollywood film Kurukshetra (2000), and he recorded two songs for the 2019 Hindi film Van Rakshak. He was also associated with the Bollywood project Yaariyan (2020).

Public profile

Known by the stage name Nati King, Kuldeep stands at approximately 5'5" (165 cm) and has black eyes and black hair. He carries several tattoos, including a guitar inked on his arm. His public image ties closely to Himachali folk traditions and contemporary remixes of regional songs.

Kuldeep is a follower of the Sant Nirankari Mission and attends satsangs when his schedule permits. He remains connected to his hometown roots in Tatrog village, Tehsil Theog, District Shimla. His son, Swardeep Sharma, performs alongside him at various stage shows, continuing the family’s musical involvement.
