Early life and backgroundKuldip Nayar was born on 14 August 1923 in Sialkot, Punjab, then part of British India (now in Pakistan). He completed a B.A. (Hons.) at Forman Christian College in Lahore and earned an L.L.B. from Law College, Lahore. In 1952 he pursued studies in journalism at the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.
Career
Nayar began his professional life in the press, initially working with an Urdu news outlet. He went on to serve as an editor for the Delhi edition of The Statesman and held roles in government media, including working as a Press Information Officer to Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri and to senior Congress leader and former Union Home Minister Govind Ballabh Pant.
Over a long and active career he wrote opinion pieces and columns for dozens of publications across India and beyond, contributing to titles such as Deccan Herald, The Statesman, The Sunday Guardian and a range of Pakistani and regional newspapers. He authored about 15 books on Indian politics, society and the subcontinent; titles from his bibliography include Between the Lines, India after Nehru, Beyond the Lines, The Judgement, India–Pakistan Relationship, Distant Neighbours: A Tale of the Subcontinent, Scoop, Wall at Wagah, India House and The Martyr.
Nayar also served in diplomatic and public roles. In 1990 he was appointed High Commissioner to the United Kingdom. He was later nominated to the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament, in August 1997. In 1996 he was part of India’s delegation to the United Nations.

Throughout his life Nayar was known for his engagement with human rights and peace initiatives. He was among the journalists detained during the Emergency in India (1975–1977), reflecting his prominent place in India’s press community and his willingness to take public stances on civil liberties.
His contributions to journalism were recognised with several honours, including an Alumni Merit Award from Northwestern University in 1999, the Astor Award for Press Freedom in 2003, the Shaheed Niyogi Memorial Award for Lifetime Achievement in Journalism in 2007, and the Ramnath Goenka Memorial Award for Lifetime Achievement in Journalism in 2015. An award bearing his name, the Kuldip Nayar Journalism Award, was established to honour outstanding work in vernacular media; the first recipient was Ravish Kumar of NDTV in March 2017.

Kuldip Nayar was married to Bharti Sachar. His family included two sons, Rajiv Nayar, who is a senior advocate of the Supreme Court of India, and Sudhir Nayar. His parents were Gurbaksh Singh Nayar and Pooran Devi Nayar. He was known to enjoy reading and writing. Physically, he is described as having black eyes and white hair.
Later years and death
Nayar lived to an advanced age and remained active as a public commentator and writer well into later life. He died on 23 August 2018 in New Delhi, India, at the age of 95. The reported cause of death was pneumonia.
