Early life and background
Kuljit Pal was born in 1933 in Nairobi, Kenya. Though born abroad, he was Indian by nationality and later built his life and career in India. Public records list his commonly used nickname as “Kuli.”

Career
Kuljit Pal began his career in Hindi cinema as a producer. His first credited production is the 1968 film Vaasna. Over the following decades he took on multiple roles in filmmaking, including producing, directing and writing. He made his directorial debut with Do Shikaari (1979). As a writer, he worked on the 1978 film Parmatma.

Among the films associated with Pal as producer are Do Shikaari (1979), Arth (1982), Aashiana (1986) and Aaj (1987). He is frequently remembered for his involvement with Arth, a film that later became the subject of a public dispute over remake rights.

Kuljit's career also intersected with the early days of several actors’ careers. He is credited with discovering Rekha and bringing her to Mumbai, arranging a multi-year contract that helped introduce her to the Hindi film industry. He first met Rekha while seeking another actress in Madras and, impressed by her potential, conducted dialogue tests before taking steps to sign her to work in Hindi films.

Pal publicly challenged Bhatt’s actions, alleging that rights to the film had been granted improperly to a Pakistani producer. Mahesh Bhatt offered a differing account, saying he had given consent for an Urdu remake to encourage cultural exchange between the two countries. The exchange attracted media attention and highlighted the ongoing importance of rights and authorship in Indian cinema.
