Early life and background
Kumar Kartikeya Singh was born on 26 December 1997 in Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh, and grew up in the village of Kuwasi. The son of Shyam Nath Singh, a police officer, and Sunita Singh, a homemaker, he left home as a teenager to pursue cricket. At age fifteen he moved to Delhi and joined a cricket academy where he lived and trained under coach Sanjay Bhardwaj, who later became a long-term mentor and supporter.

Kartikeya’s early years in Delhi were marked by hardship and determination. To support himself while training, he worked nights in a factory near Ghaziabad and endured periods of scarcity. His coach eventually took responsibility for his welfare, providing accommodation and covering cricketing expenses as Kartikeya developed his game.

Career
Kartikeya began his professional domestic career after moving to Madhya Pradesh on his coach’s advice. He played division and trial matches at Gandhi Stadium in Shahdol and earned selection for Madhya Pradesh’s Under-23 side before progressing to senior domestic competitions.

Originally a left-arm orthodox spinner, Kumar Kartikeya later learned wrist spin and has continued to bowl wrist spin alongside his slow left-arm orthodox. He made his List A debut for Madhya Pradesh in the 2018–19 Vijay Hazare Trophy on 26 September 2018 and appeared in the Ranji Trophy later that year, on 28 November 2018. He recorded his Twenty20 debut for Madhya Pradesh in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy on 2 March 2019.

Kartikeya has represented Madhya Pradesh across all three formats since his 2018 debut. In domestic club cricket he has been noted for match-winning contributions, including a man-of-the-match performance in a club game between LB Shastri Club and ONGC in 2016.

In April 2022, the Mumbai Indians named Kumar Kartikeya as a replacement player for Arshad Khan, who was ruled out through injury. The franchise highlighted his left-arm bowling and progress made working on his skills in the nets as reasons for his selection to the IPL squad.
