Early life and background

Kumar Kushagra was born on 23 October 2004 in Ramnagar, Bokaro, Jharkhand, and grew up in Jamshedpur. He attended Loyola School in Jamshedpur and has been pursuing a Bachelor of Arts at Kolhan University. Cricket featured in his childhood: he began formal training at about six years old and practised twice daily through his teenage years, often rising early to get extra net time. His family supported his cricketing education—his father, Shashikant, who worked as a district commissioner in the GST department, played an active role in guiding his development, while his mother, Pushpa Devi, is a homemaker. He has a brother, Kalash, and a sister, Sara.

Career

Kushagra started out as a batsman before focusing on wicketkeeping, influenced by the techniques of established keepers. He represented Bokaro in under-14 inter-district competition in 2014–15 and played for Jharkhand in age-group tournaments, including the Vijay Merchant Trophy in 2016. His breakthrough at the junior level came in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy, where he topped the run charts with 535 runs in seven matches.

That performance led to selection in India’s squad for the 2020 Under-19 Cricket World Cup. He featured in India’s match against Japan in that tournament, finishing unbeaten in a chase. Kushagra has also trained at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru.

He made his List A debut for Jharkhand on 20 February 2021 in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. His Twenty20 debut followed on 4 November 2021 in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he scored 111 runs across six matches in that edition. Kushagra progressed to first-class cricket in the 2021–22 Ranji Trophy for Jharkhand and recorded his maiden first-class century during the preliminary quarter-final stage of the competition.

At 17, he posted a big individual score of 266 in the 2021–22 Ranji Trophy against Nagaland, a total that broke a long-standing record set in 1975 by Javed Miandad. He was also part of Jharkhand’s squad plans for the 2020–21 Ranji Trophy but missed that campaign because he attended a pre-tournament camp for the Under-19 World Cup.

Across subsequent domestic seasons, Kushagra has continued to establish himself as a top-order batsman. In the Vijay Hazare Trophy seasons of 2022–23 and 2023–24 he scored 275 and 164 runs respectively. In the 2023 Deodhar Trophy he finished as the sixth-highest run-scorer, compiling 227 runs in five innings with a strike rate of 109.13 and contributing a half-century for East Zone in the final. By 2023 he had played 11 T20 matches, scoring 140 runs at a strike rate of 117.64.
