Early life and background

Kumar Varun was born on 19 November 1986 in Arrah, Bihar. Raised in a middle-class household and largely brought up by his grandfather, he followed a science stream after tenth grade and went on to complete a BE in Bioinformatics. He attended D. A. V. Centenary Public School in Noida and later studied engineering at Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology and Research Academy (SASTRA) in Tanjore, where he earned a strong academic record. He then completed an MBA from the Faculty of Management Studies (FMS), Delhi University. Varun has one younger sister named Supriya Pandey.

Career

Varun began his professional life in technology, joining Tata Consultancy Services in September 2008 and working there as a system engineer until May 2011. His responsibilities included strategic consulting projects intended to improve government IT systems. After moving into management roles, he worked with Mahindra & Mahindra in the Group Management Cadre and as a marketing manager at Mahindra Holidays & Resorts. He later served as a senior manager in Group Strategic Marketing and Communications at DBS from June 2015 to June 2017.

Alongside his corporate career, Varun developed a presence in comedy and digital entertainment. While working at Mahindra he teamed up with Rahul Subramanian to enter OML’s Comedy Hunt. The pair created a YouTube channel called Random Chikibum and uploaded their winning entry, Kata Sky, which launched the channel in 2015. Random Chikibum went on to produce original sketch work including a workplace comedy series, Random Daftar, in 2016.

Varun’s early collaborations included appearances in videos and sketches for established online comedy groups and creators. He featured in All India Bakchod productions, including skits such as Honest Engineering Campus Placements and other popular AIB pieces. He also appeared in projects by Sumukhi Suresh, taking roles in Behti Naak and Pushpavalli, and in the first season of Laakhon Mein Ek.

From 2016 onward Varun steadily built a filmography of web series and digital projects. He played Anirban in the first season of Better Life Foundation and took on roles in short films and digital shows such as Half Ticket 2 and a TLC India program titled Kings & Queens. In 2018 he appeared as Kranti in Zakir Khan’s Chacha Vidhayak Hain Hamare and returned for later seasons. Varun secured lead and supporting roles across platforms: he was the lead in the 2019 JioCinema comedy series Mr. Das; appeared in the MX Player series Cheesecake; and played parts in Disney+ Hotstar productions including the second season of Better Life Foundation and the ensemble comedy PariWar.

His television and streaming credits continued into 2020–2023 with appearances in Pushpavalli (season two), the web series Chacha Vidhayak Hain Hamare (season two), the Zakir Khan-produced Farzi Mushaira (seasons released on Amazon miniTV in 2022 and 2023), Hostel Daze (a role as an Election Commission officer), and the third season of Farzi Mushaira in January 2023.
