Kumud Mishra Biography

Kumud Mishra is an Indian film and theatre actor known for character roles in Bollywood and a long association with stage work. Trained at the National Sc

Early life and background

Kumud Mishra was born in Chakghat, Rewa, in Madhya Pradesh and spent his formative years influenced by a family with ties to both the military and theatre. His father served in the armed forces and organised Ramleela performances, and Mishra’s early exposure to recitations and local theatrical traditions helped shape his interest in the performing arts.

He attended Rashtriya Military School in Belgaum, Karnataka, and later returned to Bhopal to complete a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in History and Political Science. Mishra cleared the Combined Defence Service written examination during this period. Seeking formal training in acting, he joined the National School of Drama in 1990 and earned a diploma in acting. Theatre directors including Satyadev Dubey played a role in bringing him to opportunities in larger projects.

Career

Mishra’s stage work began at the Bharat Bhavan Culture Centre in Bhopal, where he acted under noted theatre practitioners and participated in productions and festivals, including an appearance in the Festival of India in the USSR in 1989. He later developed a long-term relationship with Prithvi Theatre in Mumbai that has spanned more than two decades.

On screen, his earliest television work included roles on DD National, and he made his film debut in 1996 with Sardari Begum. That same era brought him chances to audition for Shyam Benegal’s The Making of the Mahatma; he was among the final contenders for a part in that film. Through the 2000s Mishra continued to balance stage and screen, taking supporting roles in films including 1971 (2007).

A turning point in his film career came with Rockstar (2011), in which he played Khattana, a canteen man. The role and its dialogues attracted praise from critics and audiences and raised his public profile. In the years that followed he worked steadily in a string of mainstream and character-driven films: Raanjhanaa (2013), Revolver Rani (2014), Lekar Hum Deewana Dil (2014), Badlapur (2015), Bangistan (2015), Airlift (2016), Sultan (2016), Rustom (2016), MS Dhoni: The Untold Story (2016), Rock On 2 (2016), Jolly LLB 2 (2017), and P Se Pyaar F Se Faraar (2019).

Mishra has also explored short-format cinema, appearing in the sensitive short film Laddoo (2019). Alongside his acting, he co-founded a theatre group called D for DRAMA in 2013. One of the group’s productions, Dhumrapaan, earned recognition by being selected for META awards in 2017 with nominations across multiple categories.

Public profile

Often identified by the nickname Kumu, Mishra is noted for his work across both stage and screen rather than for leading-man fame. He stands at approximately 170 cm (5 feet 7 inches) and is described as having dark brown eyes and black hair. His favourite actors and theatre influences include Naseeruddin Shah, Satyadev Dubey, Anupam Kher, and others who shaped his approach to performance.

Personal life

Mishra is married to actress Ayesha Raza; the couple wed on 9 February 2008 and have a son named Kabir Mishra. He maintains ties to his roots in Madhya Pradesh while living and working out of Mumbai. Hobbies referenced in his profile include reading and travelling. His schooling at a military academy, subsequent arts degree, and dramatic training at NSD reflect a background that blended structured discipline with creative study.

Latest updates

In recent years Mishra continued to appear in notable Hindi films and short films while remaining active in theatre through his group D for DRAMA. His stage production Dhumrapaan received META recognition in 2017, and his screen work includes the short film Laddoo released in 2019.
