Early life and background

Kunal Singh Rathore was born on 9 October 2002 in Kota, Rajasthan, where he grew up in a middle-class family. He attended M.B. International School in Kota. From a young age he practised obsessively, often shadowing his elder brother to the local ground and using improvised methods at home to work on his batting. His early training included time at cricket academies in Jaipur, where he developed under coach Chandan Choudhary.

Career

Rathore progressed through age-group cricket in Rajasthan. He faced setbacks initially, missing selection in some early trials, but persisted and made the Rajasthan Under-19 side at 17. He featured in the Cooch Behar Trophy for the 2020 Under-19 championships and later earned selection to an India Under-19 One-Day Challenger Trophy squad, while being named a standby for the Under-19 World Cup.

His domestic breakthrough came after notable performances at national camps and state tournaments. He attended the Emerging Under-23 National Cricket Academy camp in 2022 and emerged as a leading run-scorer in the Colvin Shield, Rajasthan’s senior state competition. That form led to senior call-ups for Rajasthan across formats.

Rathore made his T20 debut for Rajasthan in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy on 11 October 2022 and went on to score 147 runs in that edition at a healthy average and strike rate. His List A debut followed on 12 November 2022 against Assam, and he played his first-class debut on 13 December 2022 against Goa. He kept wicket and made contributions with the bat across formats.

His performances attracted Indian Premier League interest. Rajasthan Royals bought him at auction for Rs. 20 lakhs ahead of the 2023 IPL season; he trained with the Royals’ academy and high-performance setup but did not feature in an IPL match that season. Across the 2023–2024 domestic season he recorded important numbers: in the Ranji Trophy he compiled 245 runs, including his maiden first-class century versus Manipur, and effected 19 dismissals as wicket-keeper. In the Vijay Hazare Trophy that same year he scored 250 runs at an average above 40 and accounted for 24 dismissals, helping Rajasthan reach the final.

Form varied afterward and he experienced a dip in results during the 2024/25 Ranji Trophy which led to him being left out for a period. Ahead of the 2025 IPL season he was retained by Rajasthan Royals for Rs. 30 lakhs.
