Early life and background

Kunal Shah was born on 20 May 1983 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Raised in the city he still calls home, Shah entered the workforce early and left an MBA program before completing the degree. He studied at Wilson College and later attended Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies in Mumbai. His upbringing shaped a pragmatic relationship with money and motivated his later work in consumer financial products and investing.

Career

Shah began his professional life as a junior programmer at a business process outsourcing company. While working there he met Sandeep Tandon and together they went on to launch FreeCharge in 2010. Under Shah’s leadership FreeCharge grew into a sizable digital payments service that achieved significant market attention and a $400 million valuation in 2015. That same year the business was acquired by Snapdeal. In 2017 FreeCharge changed hands again when Axis Bank acquired it.

Following the FreeCharge chapter, Shah used proceeds from the acquisition to become an active angel investor and backer of startups in India and abroad. His portfolio grew to include investments in companies such as Pianta, Unacademy and Razorpay, with the total number of startups he supported reported at around 80.

Between 2010 and 2016 Shah served in CEO roles at various companies, and in 2016 he was involved with Y Combinator. He held a term as chairman of the Internet and Mobile Association of India from January 2016 to May 2017, and later worked as an advisor at Sequoia Capital during 2017. From October 2017 onward he has been listed as an advisor to The Times Group, and since January 2018 he has advised AngelList.

In 2018 Shah founded CRED, a fintech company aimed at premium credit-card users. The platform rewards users with high credit scores for paying credit card bills, offering incentives such as discounts and memberships. CRED’s model targets the top 1% of Indian consumers by disposable income and was reported to have about 5.9 million active users, processing roughly 20% of credit card bill payments in India.
