Early life and backgroundKushal Malla was born on 5 March 2004 in Butwal, Rupandehi, Nepal. He grew up in the same town and attended New Horizon School in Butwal from around third grade onward. Later he earned a scholarship to study at Kshitij International College in Kalikanagar, Butwal and as of 2023 was pursuing a Bachelor of Business Studies (BBS).
Cricket entered Kushal’s life at an early age. He played for his school team and stood out in inter-school competitions. A notable youth performance came when he struck 15 sixes in a single school match at age 12, a display that attracted the attention of his coach, Shakti Gaucham, and helped set him on a path to higher-level cricket.
Career
Kushal is an all-rounder who bats left-handed and bowls slow left-arm orthodox. At the domestic level he has represented Tribhuwan Army Club. He has also played for a number of franchise sides, including Rupandehi Challengers, Bhairahawa Gladiators, Mahendranagar United, Team Abu Dhabi, Gwadar Sharks, Biratnagar Super Kings, and Pokhara Avengers.
He progressed through Nepal’s age-group sides and was named in senior T20 squads for the 2019–20 Singapore Tri-Nation Series and the 2019–20 Oman Pentangular Series. Kushal made his Twenty20 International debut on 27 September 2019 against Zimbabwe in Singapore. His One Day International debut came on 8 February 2020 against the United States at Kirtipur, Nepal.
Kushal announced himself on the international stage in his debut ODI by scoring a half-century, finishing with 50 from 51 balls. He became one of the youngest players to reach such milestones for his country and continued to collect notable achievements as a teenager.
In 2020 he was among eighteen players awarded a central contract by the Cricket Association of Nepal, formalising his place within the national setup. In April 2023 Kushal recorded his first ODI century against Oman. In September 2023, while representing Nepal at the Asian Games, he struck the fastest century in T20 International cricket to that date, reaching 100 in 34 balls during a match versus Mongolia.
Throughout his career Kushal has worn several jersey numbers for Nepal, including 5, 2, and 55. His domestic performances include a standout 111 from 63 balls in Nepal’s premier 50-over competition in 2018, an innings featuring 13 sixes that helped draw national selectors’ attention.

Kushal comes from a family in Butwal. His father, Romanta Malla, worked as a security officer on Qatar’s underground railway project, and his mother is Sarmila Malla. He is unmarried. Physically, Kushal stands about 170 cm (5 feet 7 inches) tall and has black hair and black eyes. He also has piercings in both ears.

In March 2023 his alma mater, New Horizon School, organised an event to honour him after Nepal qualified for the one-day World Cup by defeating UAE in the ICC Cricket World Cup League Two final; he was presented with a cash prize at the ceremony.
