Léon Marchand was born on 17 May 2002 in Toulouse, France. He grew up in a swimming household: both of his parents competed for France at the Olympic Games, and his uncle also swam at an elite level. Marchand learned the basics of the sport as a child in Toulouse, briefly stepped away from the pool because he found the water too cold, then returned at age nine and developed into a serious competitor.
