López Obrador Biography

Andrés Manuel López Obrador is a Mexican politician who rose from local public service in Tabasco to national prominence and ultimately won the presidency.

Early life and background

Andrés Manuel López Obrador was born on November 13, 1953, in the small village of Tepetitán in the southern Mexican state of Tabasco. He is the eldest son in a family that ran a fabric and retail business; both of his parents worked in the family trade. As a boy he attended the Marcos Becerra school in his hometown and later completed secondary and high school education in Villahermosa, Tabasco. His family moved to Villahermosa in the mid-1960s, where they opened a clothes and shoe store called Novedades Andrés.

A violent incident in 1969, when his brother José Ramón was fatally shot, left a deep mark on his early life. López Obrador later moved to Mexico City to study political and social sciences at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), where he earned his degree in 1987.

Career

López Obrador began his political career in the mid-1970s when he joined the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) in 1976. He first became involved in regional politics in Tabasco, supporting campaigns and heading the Indigenous People’s Institute of Tabasco in 1977. By the 1980s he had moved into federal administration, working for the National Consumers’ Institute in Mexico City.

Dissatisfaction with the PRI led him to join the Democratic Current in 1988, a left-leaning faction that evolved into the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD). He rose quickly within that movement, becoming president of the PRD in 1996 and serving until 1999. His national profile increased under the PRD banner, and after running for governor of Tabasco in 1994, he later contested and won the office of Head of Government of the Federal District (Mexico City) in 2000, holding that position until 2005.

López Obrador used his tenure as Head of Government to advance social programs aimed at vulnerable populations, including older adults, single mothers, and people with disabilities. He helped establish the Universidad Autónoma de la Ciudad de México and led restoration and modernization efforts in Mexico City’s historic center. His municipal administration was noted for keeping a large share of its campaign promises and for earning international recognition, including being a finalist for the World Mayor Prize in 2004.

His national ambitions produced three presidential campaigns. He lost close contests in 2006 and 2012; after the 2006 election his supporters staged a large rally at the Zócalo in Mexico City and proclaimed him “Legitimate President.” In 2012 he left the PRD and founded a new political movement, the Movement for National Regeneration, later formalized as MORENA. Running as MORENA’s candidate, he won the presidency on his third attempt in July 2018.

Public profile

Known popularly by the nickname “El Peje,” after a regional fish, López Obrador is a prominent figure in contemporary Mexican politics. He has been associated with a populist, nationalist rhetoric that during the 2018 campaign was summarized by pledges such as living in his own middle-class home, converting the official presidential residence into an arts center, selling the presidential plane, and reducing the presidential salary. During that campaign he was also compared in some commentary to other nationalist leaders for a “country-first” style of messaging.

He is identified politically with the National Regeneration Movement (MORENA) and is often described as Mexico’s president. His notable rivals over the years included conservative and centrist figures from the PAN and PRI parties.

Personal life

López Obrador is Mexican by nationality and was raised in a Roman Catholic household. He married Rocío Beltrán Medina in 1979; the marriage ended in divorce in 2003. He later married Beatriz Gutiérrez Müller in 2006. He is a father to four sons: José Ramón, Andrés Manuel, and Gonzalo Alfonso from his first marriage, and Jesús Ernesto from his second. His family includes several siblings and his parents were merchants originally connected to Veracruz and Cantabria in Spain on his maternal side.

He stands around 1.73 meters (about 5 feet 8 inches) tall, has gray hair and dark brown eyes, and enjoys baseball, reading, and travel. He has named the St. Louis Cardinals as a favorite baseball team.

Latest updates

By mid-2018 López Obrador had completed a long political arc from local and federal public service to the presidency. His policies and public commitments during the successful 2018 campaign emphasized austerity, institutional changes, and social programs, reinforcing his reputation as a transformative and controversial national leader.
