Early life and background

M. P. Michael, professionally known as Lal, was born on 2 December 1958 in Kerala. He grew up in the state where he later launched a long career in film. Lal attended St. Augustine's High School in Ernakulam. He comes from a family with connections to the arts: his brother Alex Paul is a music composer and his nephew Balu Varghese works as an actor and singer.

Career

Lal began in performance as a mimicry artist at Cochin Kalabhavan alongside his longtime collaborator Siddique. The pair formed the filmmaking team Siddique-Lal, gaining recognition for comic films such as Ramji Rao Speaking (1989), In Harihar Nagar (1990) and Godfather (1991). Their work together established Lal in the Malayalam film industry as a writer and director before the duo split in 1993.

His early film work included an assistant director credit on Nokkethadhoorathu Kannum Nattu (1984). Siddique-Lal made Lal a credited director with Ramji Rao Speaking (1989). After the split, Lal made a cameo acting appearance in Manathe Kottaram (1994) and then took on his first substantial acting role as Paniyan in Kaliyattam (1997), the film adaptation of Shakespeare's Othello.

Lal expanded into producing with Hitler (1996) and subsequently produced and distributed a number of Malayalam films including Thenkasipattanam (2000), Kalyanaraman (2002), Black (2004) and Panthaya Kozhi (2007). He also contributed the story for the Bollywood hit Hera Pheri, which was based on the Siddique-Lal film Ramji Rao Speaking.

After several years focused on production and acting, Lal returned to directing in 2009 with 2 Harihar Nagar. His directorial credits include In Ghost House Inn (2010), Tournament (2010), Cobra (2012), King Liar (2016) and HoneyBee 2.5 (2017). He has frequently combined directing duties with acting and writing.

As an actor, Lal has worked across multiple South Indian film industries. In Malayalam he has appeared in titles such as Mazha (2000), Kalyanaraman (2002), The Don (2006), Unnam (2012), Fukri (2017), Mahaveeryar (2022) and 2018 (2023). His performance in Mahaveeryar earned him a SIIMA award for Best Supporting Actor in 2023.

Lal entered Tamil cinema with Engal Anna (2004) and has taken on villainous and character roles in films such as Sandakozhi (2005). He portrayed Tirukoilur Malaiyaman in Mani Ratnam's Ponniyin Selvan: I (2022) and its sequel Ponniyin Selvan: II (2023), performances that were widely noted by audiences. Other Tamil credits include Aalwar (2007), Kutti Puli (2013), God Father (2020) and The Warriorr (2022). He has also acted in Telugu films including Khatarnak (2006), Annavaram (2006), Saaho (2019) and Veera Simha Reddy (2023).
