Early life and background

Lalduhoma was born on 22 February 1949 in Tualpui, Mizoram, and is from Aizawl. He completed a Bachelor of Arts with distinction from North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong, in 1976 while working in the office of the chief minister. He is married to Liansailovi since 15 August 1972 and they have two sons. His parents are Vaisanga and Kaichhingi, and he has four siblings.

Career

Lalduhoma began his public-service career in the Indian Police Service after passing the civil services examination in 1977. Early postings included training in Delhi and a field posting in Goa, where he gained attention for an unconventional operational approach. He rose to become Deputy Commissioner of Police and, in 1982, served in a security role that included responsibility for the prime minister. He also served as secretary of the organising committee for the 1982 Asian Games.

In 1984 he resigned from the police to enter electoral politics with the Indian National Congress. That year he was named vice-chairman of the Mizoram State Planning Board and was appointed president of the Mizoram Congress. He won election to the Lok Sabha as an INC candidate in December 1984. In the mid-1980s Lalduhoma shifted his focus toward negotiating a political settlement for Mizoram’s long-running insurgency, chairing peace efforts that culminated in the Mizoram Peace Accord of 1986.

Following his work on the peace process, he left the Congress in 1986. His resignation from the party led to his disqualification from Parliament under India’s anti-defection law, making him the first MP to be disqualified under that provision. He continued to organize and lead peace initiatives in the state, including public protests and a hunger strike that helped re‑start stalled negotiations in 1986.

Later he became involved with regional politics: in 1997 he briefly advised the Mizo National Front before forming a breakaway group that became the Zoram Nationalist Party (ZNP). As a ZNP candidate he was elected to the Mizoram Legislative Assembly in 2003 from the Ratu constituency. In 2018 he helped form the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) as a coalition; when the ZPM was not yet registered with the Election Commission he contested as an independent and won two seats, choosing to represent Serchhip. He served as leader of the opposition in the Mizoram Legislative Assembly until his disqualification by the Speaker in November 2020. He returned to office after winning a Serchhip by-election in April 2021.

In December 2023 Lalduhoma contested as a ZNP candidate from Serchhip, was elected to the assembly, and on 8 December 2023 was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Mizoram.
