Early life and background

Lalit Kumar grew up in a village in Delhi and comes from a family with a wrestling background. After completing his graduation from Delhi University, he trained at his uncle’s akhara, Lala Ram Vyamshala, in the Roshnara area of Delhi. His early competitive years were spent in the 63-kg and 68-kg divisions, where he earned multiple medals at national and university events during the 1990s.

A repeated knee injury forced Lalit to stop competing. Encouraged by his uncle to remain connected to the sport, he pursued formal training in coaching. He completed a diploma in wrestling coaching at the National Institute of Sports (NIS) in Patiala, graduating from the program in 2006.

Career

After finishing his coaching diploma, Lalit began his professional coaching career under a contract with the Uttar Pradesh government, working in Bulandshahar. He later returned to his uncle’s gym in Delhi and, after some time there, accepted an offer to join the Delhi government’s coaching staff.

Lalit started working for the Delhi government at the Singhu Sports Complex in 2010. In 2012 he was posted to the Chhatrasal Stadium, where he has been based for about a decade. Over the years he has trained several prominent wrestlers, including Olympic silver medallists Ravi Dahiya and Deepak Punia.

His trainees also include Aman Sehrawat, who won a world championship silver and went on to earn a bronze medal at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou. Lalit has represented India’s coaching community at international school-level competitions; he is pictured with other coaches at the World Schools Championships and Gymnasiade in Turkey in 2016.

Recognition

Lalit Kumar’s coaching work has been recognised at the state and national levels. In September 2021 he received the Delhi State Best Sports Coach award. In January 2024 he was honoured with the Dronacharya Award for Outstanding Coaches in Sports and Games for 2023.
